Who is your favorite writer?
Goodness. I am very passionate about the classics, like e. e. cummings, William Faulkner, Sylvia Plath, and Edgar Allan Poe. Otherwise, I really enjoy Jo Ann Beard, Jennifer Armintrout (yes, I’m a sucker for her Bloodties series; no, that pun was not intended), R. A. Nelson, Kerry Cohen, and Kelly Braffet. Heck, I even like Tucker Max. I have a strange set of favorites.
Do you write full-time?
Nope. I’m a full-time employee at a software company.
If you’re not a full-time writer, how do you make time to write?
That’s just it. I make time. I treat it as a second job for which I need to be responsible. That includes showing up on time, producing work, and tying up loose ends before I close my laptop.
What is your favorite genre to write?
For a very long time, I loved to write nothing but poetry, but then I was mentored by a linear gentleman by the name of Kevin Oderman and learned to appreciate non-fiction (lyrical, essays, memoirs, and so forth).
Do you have a favorite book?
Pretty Little Dirty by Amanda Boyden.
“somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond” by e. e. cummings.
What was the first story you ever wrote?
It was called “The Haunted School.” About some kids stuck in a school while their uncle, dressed as a ghost, ran the halls trying to scare everyone off. I don’t know. I was in the 5th grade.
Worst thing that happened to you when you were writing?
God, when I was 12, I had this really long novel going—it was about 365 pages, definitely a quantity-over-quality type thing—and I had it on two floppy disks and saved on the home computer. One day, the computer BSOD’d and I tried to recover my novel from the floppy disks, but both of them had corrupt files. I lost everything. I cried for like, three weeks.
When you’re not writing, how do you pass the time?
I play League of Legends with my husband and some international friends (summoner names: Amberguity, Videl Satan, and LadyntheDistance). I have a strange addiction to Dairy Queen and Rick and Morty. Oh, and I’m a two-time ice cream competition winner at the company for which I work. Here I am with my amazing team and coworkers representing our Buttermilk Strawberry recipe victory. Our first recipe was Apple Pie Moonshine.
Umm. I grew up with a pet deer named Hazel? She loves vanilla cookies and knows how to dance in circles.
